I’m Blair A. Baker, an Assistant Professor of School Psychology at Cleveland State University. When our policies and practices empower educators to advocate for their students, we can better prevent negative outcomes for the students they care about. To carry out this goal, I research practical steps we can take to better respond to and prevent the discrimination between students at school.
I also investigate racial battle fatigue in Black students, which occurs when students of color have to consistently cope with racial discrimination. Resolving issues around student discrimination and racial battle fatigue could improve Black students’ mental, academic, and social wellbeing. Read publications.
I’m Director of the Racial Equity in Education Lab (REEL). We do collaborative research to equip schools with informed recommendations toward improving educational environments for students. Practical changes such as checking in on targeted students and referring them to support staff, can make a meaningful difference. When people such as administrators, teachers, and school psychologists, have systems in place to protect students when discrimination happens, it promotes a healthier school community for everyone.
The REEL is interested in partnering with schools and school districts in the Cleveland region to support our local community with evidence-based interventions. We’re doing research, data collection, and analysis to equip you with informed recommendations. Reach out for consultation or to chat about partnering with the Racial Equity in Education Lab.
